The House of Representatives Committee on Internally Displaced Persons, Refugees and Migrants has tasked the management of National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to as matter of urgency come up with a databank for the IDPs within Nigeria and beyond.

Chairman, House Committee on Internally Displaced Persons, Migrants and Refugees, Hon. Umar Mohammed Jega

Chairman, House Committee on Internally Displaced Persons, Migrants and Refugees, Hon. Umar Mohammed Jega made this know during the 2022 Budget Defence of the Commission.

Hon. Jega who made this known during the Budget Defence of the commission on Monday 8th November, 2021 further said the databank and accurate data collection is very critical in addressing the challenges of IDPs.

“There is serious need of databank and accurate data collection in order to properly address the challenges of IDPs.

‘There cannot be proper planning and execution of projects without accurate data collection.

“Accurate data collection will help us to know how many people were displaced, how many have been resettled, how many are in the negbouring countries, how many were displaced by bandits, insurgents, militants or natural disaster like flood among others,” Jega said.

The Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Hajia Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim who presented N5.74 billion as 2022 budget proposal of the commission, said she had just been appointed on 4th June, 2021 as the head of the commission but she will do her best along side with the management team of the commission as well as collaboration with relevant stakeholders to address the problems of Persons of Concern.

She said N4.5 billion is budgeted for capital component of the commission for 2022 while N1.1 billion is for recurrent expenditure.

Earlier, while making his remarks Hon. Umar Jega said “Honourable Colleagues, I am delighted to welcome all Honourable Members, Honourable Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to this 2022 Budget Defence.

“This is an occasion to which Ministries and Agencies of Government defend their budgetary estimates before the relevant Committees of the National Assembly which hasve supervisory and Legislative Oversight responsibilities over them as a constitutional mandate.

“As the Committee on which the Nigerian people place their trust’, we are aware that the annual budget affects the life of every Nigerian both individually and collectively.

We therefore owe them a duty to do the needful and responsibility expected of us.

“We are therefore poised for a collaborative action with the executive arm of Government to ensure that we design a performing budget that will meet the expectations of the teeming populace.

“This is the mantra on which the House of Representative under the Leadership of the Rt Hon. Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila stands for and captured in the 9th Legislative Agenda of the House.

“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and social Development is created by this Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to address the numerous Humanitarian challenges confronting the citizenry as a result of insurgency, Arm banditry
and other humanitarian challenges affecting the country.

It is in view of this similar challenge, that the Commission was also established some years ago.

“We therefore assure the commission of our collective concern to succeed and achieve the mandate for which it is established. We will therefore call for the Honourable Commissioner to present the 2022 Budget of her commission. But she will need to first of all present the 2021 budget performance.”
