Each of the 774 LGAs Deserve Federal Medical Centre – Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub

Member representing Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives Hon. ( Dr.) Yusuf Buba Yakub, has said that each of the 774 Local Government Areas across the country deserves to have a Federal Medical Centre sited on their soil.

The Member ,who is also Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs said Nigeria has the resources to achieve the above, but lamented that the high spate of corruption and the many wastages in the government circles have been a bane to such a commonplace ambition in a country that is blessed beyond measure in human and natural resources.

“We have the resources and the corresponding manpower to achieve all that we want in the health sector. Some of our medical personnel are unemployed or even under-employed; while others are outside the country plying their trade and contributing to the high incidence of brain drain among medical professionals that we currently experience in the country”.

Buba used the opportunity to call on all Federal legislators to advance the need and impress it on Government through the sponsorship of Bills to establish a Federal Medical Centre and other medical facilities in all parts of their Constituencies, saying the medical facilities are overstretched to the extent that a visit to some medical facilities would show unavailability of bed spaces, with patients sometimes lying on bare floor.

Buba queried why our elite would undertake medical tourism abroad if the health-sector needs were adequate, stressing that it is time to put an end to such realities by doing the needful.

The Member, who spoke to media men at the end of the Public Hearing on the Bill for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Mubi, Adamawa State, which held at the Senate, Thursday, said these Federal Medical Centres will never be enough, but attempts must be made to bridge the gap in the healthcare needs of Nigerians.
