House of Reps Pass Bill Establishing Vigilante Group of Nigeria

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a ‘Bill for an Act to establish the Vigilante Group of Nigeria charged with the responsibility for, among others, providing community policing and maintenance of law and order and community service for Nigerians; and for related matters.”

The was sponsored by Hon. (Dr.) Abbas Tajudeen PhD representing Zaria Federal Constituency of Kaduna.

According to Bill, the Vigilant Group shall be under the overall command of the Commandant-General of the Vigilante Group.

The security agency shall have the State commands, Local Government Area commands and Ward commands respectively.

6 Command Structure

(1) The Vigilant Group shall be under the overall command of the Commandant-General of the Vigilante Group
(2) The State commands, Local Government Area commands and Ward commands respectively.

According to the bill Clause 6 (1a) “The Board shall appoint for the vigilante Group such number of
Deputy Commandants-General, Commandants and such officers and other ranks as it may deem fit, for the purpose of the Group;

“(1b) The terms and conditions of Service (including Salaries, allowances, benefits and Pensions) of regular members of the Vigilante Group shall be as determined by the Board using same criteria as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps with the approval of the Minister”

Once the bill is passed by the Senate and assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari VGN will be fully established and becomes security outfit of the government.
