Lawan Loses Bid to Return to Senate as Court Affirms Machina ss APC Candidate for Yobe North

The Nigerian Senate President, Ahmad Lawan may have lost hope of returning to the National Assembly by 2023 following a Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu that affirmed Bashir Sheriff Machina as the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) senatorial candidate for Yobe North.

Justice Fadima Aminu in her ruling on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately publish Machina’s name as the ruling party’s candidate in the district’s 2023 National Assembly election.

The judge also said Bashir Sheriff Machina was duly elected senatorial candidate for APC, consequently upholding the May 28 primary election of the party that was also certified by INEC.

Recall, the Yobe North senatorial ticket sparked controversy after Machina, who won the primary, made it clear he would not step down for Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.

Lawan had contested for the APC presidential ticket in May, but lost to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Also, no records of Lawan’s participation in the APC senatorial primaries were presented by the APC, although the APC chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, disclosed that the aspirant took part in the elections.

However, Lawan, who currently represents Yobe north district, was eventually listed as the APC senatorial candidate for the 2023 general election, leaving Machina who actually won the elections out of the picture.

The APC chairman had urged Machina to step down for Lawan, but the appeal fell on the deaf ears
