Most of Nigerian Ports about 100 Years without Major Rehabilitation – Hon. Garba Datti

BY OBUTE JAMES

Hon. Garba Datti, Chairman, House Committee on Ports and Harbours said most of Nigerian ports today need total overhaul as there have not been any major repair on them since they were built several years ago.

Speaking in an Interview with THE LEGISLATURE, Datti who is representing Sabon Gari Federal Constituency of Kaduna State said Port Harcourt Port was built about 100 years ago without any major rehabilitation, “Apapa Port, Tinker Island also need rehabilitation.”

“These ports, particularly Port Harcourt Port, Apapa Port and Tinker Island are commercial hub of the nation and they need total overhaul. The government needs to pay adequate attention to them,” he said.

Speaking on the land border closure, Datti said the country (Nigeria) has nothing to regret, “it is Nigerian land borders that are closed, we did not close the borders of any country. Why are people crying in those countries. It is because they have been sabotaging our country. They will import goods into their countries and collect custom duties and still bring those goods into Nigeria without paying anything.

Let me tell you that over 90% of different varieties of crops grown all over the world can be grown in Nigeria. We have the fertile land, we have the manpower, population and market. Why should we employ farmers in India, Holland, Vietnam etc and neglect our own countries?

On whether they have been any major change in activities at the ports since the land borders were closed, Datti said “Yes, there is tremendous improvement in activities at the ports. Several ships now bert in the Nigerian ports and this has increased the revenue being generated for the country.”

On 2020 Budget, Datti said they are making sure to return the country to the January to December Budget so that there can be a standard.
