The Nigerian Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has revealed while he will not advocate the reduction of the nation’s legislature to unicamera.
Nigeria runs bicameral legislature consisting of the Senate and House of Representatives.
He said the reason for adopting bicameral legislature as stated in the constitution was to address the country’s diversity and ethnic composition to ensure justice, equity and fairness for all Nigerians irrespective of their background.
Lawan made this known at the convocation ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) on Monday at the National Assembly, Abuja,
According to Lawan, having a unicameral legislature may create problems of non-representation and exclusion from governance for minority ethnic groups in the country, as well as inefficient representation for groups in the majority.
“The diversity of Nigeria and ethnic composition of the country requires that we have a system that provides justice, equity and fair play.
