One of three security operatives attacked when Hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shiites stormed National Assembly is dead.
The Shiites Muslims on Tuesday, stormed the National Assembly to protest the continuous detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
Sources at the National Assembly told THE LEGISLATURE that a police Sargent who was among the security operatives attacked during the protest has died from the injuries he sustained.
The security source also told this medium that 2IC to the DPO in charge of National Assembly is also in critical condition at National Hospital in Abuja.
The source affirmed that the security operatives affected in the attack were mostly those attached to second gate of the National Assembly.
A security operative who spoke to this medium on the condition of anonymity said:
“We were overpowered at the first gate of the National Assembly when our effort to lock the gate failed before they descended on us.
“We all fled to the second gate to inform our colleagues of the development but it appeared they did not take us seriously until they stormed the second gate and seized the rifle of a Police Sargent who was seriously wounded.
“As I’m talking to you now, the officer who hails from Kogi State is dead. They are other of my colleagues that sustained various degree of injuries that were rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja.
IMN members protest regularly outside the National Assembly in the capital, Abuja, calling for the release of their leader, Ibrahim el-Zakzaky, who has been in detention since 2015.
Police had earlier confirmed that 2 of their officers were shot while 6o others sustained various degree of injuries from the attack.
