State Creation: Senate President Calls for Views from Nigerians as Senator Utazi, Others Make Case for Adada State

The Nigerian Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan has called on Nigerians to come up with views and proposals on how to amend the 1999 constitution.

He made this known when the deligation from Enugu State led by Senator Chukwuka Utazi, Engr Vita Abba and immediate past President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo , Chief John Nwodo, paid a courtesy call on him on the need to create Adada State.

The Delegation of the Contact and Lobby group for Adada State who visited both Chambers also included Hon Toby Okechukwu, the Deputy Minority Leader, Dr Patrick Asadu, the Leader of the Enugu Caucus of the House of Reps and Igwe Okeosisi Itodo, a paramount Traditional Ruler, who was a member of the House of Reps in 1983

The deligation also visited the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in his capacity as Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Review as well as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Idris Wase in his capacity as Chairman, House Committee on Constitution Review .

The proposed Adada State is to be carbed out of Enugu State. and it shares boundary with Benue and Kogi States.

Senator Chukwuka Utazi, (Enugu North) who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Primary Healthcare and Communicable disease thanked Senator Lawan for granting the audience to his people

The deligation said the National Assembly has the mandate of state creation but since 1996 no state has been created giving room to serious marginalization.

Nwodo said “South East consists of South and North. The South has Abia, Anambra and Imo States, the North has Enugu and Ebonyi States.

Lawan who welcomed them and said Senator Utazi has briefed him on what Adada state means promised to give them the needed support.

“Nigerians should come up with views on how to move ahead. What the constitution should have and what it should not have.

“Our diversity should not be a source of adversity,” Lawan said.

In their seperate interface with the President and Deputy President of the Senate as well as the leadership of the House of Representatives, Adada State agitators, said the State was approved by delegates at the 2014 National Conference and has no petition against it both within and outside Enugu State.
