Recall that the Senate and House of Representatives had on Tuesday 1st March, 2022 considered Constitution Review Committee Report and passed several bills out of the 68 bills.

Speaking to THE LEGISLATURE in an interview Hon. Umar Mohammed Jega said the Constitution is on trial and is subject to amendment.

On the passage of the Local Government Autonomy, Jega said lack of autonomy for them over the years has hindered progress at the grassroots level, the main purpose of creating the local government areas.

“I think the Constitution of Nigeria is on trial and we continue to smend it in line with the current realities.

“The lack of Independence for the local government areas in our country has hindered progress in the grassroots level.

“Local Government is expected to bring development to the grassroots but today there is meaningful development in all these locations because there have no independence.

“With the passage of the Local Government Autonomy bill by the two chambers of National Assembly, I’m very henceforth, there will be meaningful development in the local government level.”

According to Jega who represnts Gwandu/Aliero/Jega Federal Constituency of Kebbi state, this amendment gives room for local government to have specific time which their election will be conducted like every other general election in the country.

There will have functional executive and legislative system.

He said a separate office for Attorney General of the Federation, Minister of Justice, Accountant General of the Federation and Accountant General of the Federal Government all indicated that the nation is moving toward progress.
