Senator Akume, Akpabio Lose Senate Seat


Former Governor of Benue State and representative of Benue North West Senatorial District in the 8th Senate, George Akume and his counterpart in Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio will not return to the 9th Senate which will be constituted in June.

Akume, the candidate of All Progressive Congress, APC lost to Orker Jev, a member of the House of representative and candidate of Peoples Democratic Party in the February 23 parliamentary election.

Similarly, INEC  on Tuesday afternoon declared Mr Akpabio’s opponent, Chris Ekpenyong, the winner of the election in Akwa Ibom North-West Sensational District.

The INEC declaration was done at the commission’s headquarters in Uyo.

According to the result announced by the returning officer, Peter Oban, a professor, Mr Akpabio, a former governor of his state (2007-2015) scored 83,158 votes, while Mr Ekpenyong scored 118,215 votes.

The decision to announce the result at the state headquarters instead at the zonal headquarters may not be unconnected to the security situation.
