According to the result announced by the returning officer, Peter Oban, a professor, Mr Akpabio, a former governor of his state (2007-2015) scored 83,158 votes, while Mr Ekpenyong scored 118,215 votes.

The decision to announce the result at the state headquarters instead at the zonal headquarters may not be unconnected to the security situation.
